What is periodontal disease?
"Perio" means around and "dontal" refers to teeth. Periodontal diseases – also referred to as periodontitis – are infections of the structures around the teeth, caused by the bacteria in dental plaque.
Gingivitis – a gum infection – can be an early stage of periodontal disease. More advanced forms of the disease can affect surrounding tissues, ligament and bone. Teeth can become loose and may fall out.
There is no cure for periodontal disease, but early intervention can help prevent it from developing further.
